The authors study large-time behavior of solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations without heat conductivity. In Lagrangian coordinates the problem has the form \[ \begin{aligned} & \frac{\partial v}{\partial t}-\frac{\partial u}{\partial x} =0, \quad \frac{\partial u}{\partial t}+\frac{\partial p}{\partial x}= \frac\partial{\partial x}\left(\frac\mu v\frac{\partial u}{\partial x} \right),\\ &\frac{\partial E}{\partial t}+ \frac{\partial}{\partial x}\left(pu\right)= \frac\partial{\partial x}\left(\frac\mu v u\frac{\partial u}{\partial x} \right),\qquad x\in \mathbb{R},\;t>0,\\ &u(x,0)=u_0(x),\quad p(x,0)=p_0(x),\quad s(x,0)=s_0(x). \end{aligned} \] Here \(v\) is the specific volume of the gas, \(u\) is the velocity, \(p\) is the pressure, \(E=e+\frac 12 u^2\) is the total energy, \(e\) is the internal energy, \(s\) is the entropy, \(\mu\) is the viscosity coefficient. \(\mu\) is a given positive function of \(v\) and \(e\); \(u_0,\;p_0,\;s_0\) are given functions. It is proved that if the initial data \((u_0,\;p_0,\;s_0)\) is the perturbation of a constant state \((0,\;\overline p,\;\overline s)\) with a certain decay property with respect to \(x\) then the above Cauchy problem has a unique solution. The decay properties of the solution with respect to \(x\) and \(t\) are established.
