The paper presents a survey on known [\textit{W. W. Comfort} and \textit{L. C. Robertson}, Dis. Math. 272 (1988; Zbl 0703.22002); \textit{W. W. Comfort, H. Gladdines} and \textit{J. van Mill}, Ann. New York Acad. Sci. 728, 237-247 (1994; Zbl 0915.54029); \textit{W. W. Comfort} and \textit{J. van Mill}, Topology Appl. 33, No. 1, 21-45 (1989; Zbl 0698.54003); 77, No. 2, 105-113 (1997; Zbl 0920.22001); \textit{D. Shakhmatov} and the author, Fundam. Math. 147, No. 3, 197-212 (1995; Zbl 0835.22004); Tsukuba J. Math. 21, No. 1, 251-262 (1997; Zbl 0887.22004); Math. Jap. 45, No. 3, 497-501 (1997; Zbl 0897.22005)] and some new results on the problem of existence of dense proper pseudocompact subgroups \(H\) of a compact non metrizable group \(G\). Different levels of difficulty are considered, depending on the level of pseudocompactness of \(H\) (countably compact, \(\omega\)-bounded) or on the size of the distinguished family of such subgroups \(H\) of \(G\). In some cases, the maximum size \(2^{|G|}\) of such a family can be attained (e.g., when \(G\) is product-like, i.e., \(G\) admits a continuous surjective homomorphism onto a product of \(w(G)\) many non-trivial compact metric groups).
