In [Rep. Math. Phys. 43, 35-42 (1999; Zbl 0963.53045), see the review above] the authors introduced a variational principle for symplectic connections. The solutions (if they do exist) of the corresponding field equation are called preferred symplectic connections. The paper under review continues the considerations above. In the case that the underlying manifold is a two-dimensional compact symplectic manifold they determine all preferred symplectic connections. In contrast to this, the two-dimensional non-compact case is very different. For this case an essentially exhaustive list of solutions is given. Finally, an idea is indicated, how this can be used to construct preferred connections on the cotangent bundle.
