Continuing work of \textit{S. Shelah} [Classification theory and the number of non-isomorphic models (North-Holland, Amsterdam) (1978; Zbl 0388.03009), 2nd ed. (1990; Zbl 0713.03013); Ann. Math. Log. 19, 177-203 (1980; Zbl 0489.03008)] on the cardinality of families of pairwise incompatible types in simple theories, the author obtains several new characterizations of simple and supersimple theories, develops a local analysis of the number of types in simple theories and finds a new example of a simple unstable theory.
