The authors deal with a driven and damped sine-Gordon system and present several interesting predictions for space-time instabilities for this system. Since for the system under consideration the classical method is not applicable, the authors use a modified version of the Melnikov method to homoclinic bifurcations of the perturbed sine-Gordon system. They provide the dynamical behaviour of the sine-Gordon system by numerical computations.
