The asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of Toeplitz matrices generated by a complex valued symbol \(f\) are considered. If the range of \(f\) has an empty interior and does not separate the complex plane, then the Toeplitz eigenvalues have the canonical distribution. The clustering properties of the eigenvalues are discussed. Applications involve discussions on irregular symbols and suitable range, piecewise smooth closed curves, and PC symbols with several jumps. The results are extended to multilevel Toeplitz matrices.
