In Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 47, 229-236 (1975; Zbl 0303.58008) \textit{R. T. Smith} calculated the index and the nullity of the identity map between Euclidean spheres. The main result here is to compute the index and the nullity of the identity map of \(S^m\times S^n\) and also \(S^n\times T^m\). As a consequence, the authors give an example of a Jacobi field along the identity map of \(S^1\times S^6\) whose flow does not consist of harmonic maps.
