A \(L^p - L^{p'}\) estimate for the Klein-Gordon equation with a potential on the line is obtained. With the help of this estimate the scattering operator for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with potential is constructed. Moreover, the inverse nonlinear scattering problem is solved. Namely, it is proved that the small amplitude scattering operator uniquely determines both the potential and the nonlinearity. The proof gives also a method for the reconstruction of both the potential and nonlinearity. The basic input for the proof of these results is the continuity in the Sobolev spaces \(W_{k, p}\) of the Schrödinger wave operators.
