Besov spaces \(B_{p,q}^s(\mathbb R^n)\) and Lizorkin-Triebel \(F_{p,q}^{s}(\mathbb R^n)\) are natural generalizations of Sobolev and Hölder spaces. A key role in the theory of embeddings of these spaces is played by the number \(s-n/p\) called the differential dimension. If \(0<p_0\leq p\) and if \[ s_0-\frac{n}{p_0}\geq s-\frac{n}{p} \] then \[ F_{p_0,q_0}^{s_0}(\mathbb R^n)\hookrightarrow F_{p,q}^{s}(\mathbb R^n), \quad 0<q_0, q\leq \infty \quad\text{continuous embedding} \] and \[ B_{p_0,q_0}^{s_0}(\mathbb R^n)\hookrightarrow B_{p,q}^{s}(\mathbb R^n), \quad 0<q_0, q\leq \infty \quad\text{continuous embedding}. \] The authors show that if one restricts itself to the subspaces \(R B_{p,q}^{s}(\mathbb R^n)\) and \(R F_{p,q}^{s}(\mathbb R^n)\) of radial functions (distributions), then most of the above embeddings become compact. Moreover, a complete characterization of all situations in which the above embeddings are compact, is given. In order to prove their embedding theorem, the authors establish a new atomic decomposition theorem adapted to the radial situation. As one of the consequences an extension of the Strauss lemma is established (a lemma which gives information on the relation between smoothness and decay of radial functions). It is proven that \[ |f(x)|\leq c \|f |B_{p,q}^{s}(\mathbb R^n) \||x|^{\frac{1-n}{p}},\quad x\neq 0, \] for some constant independent of \(f\) and \(x\) but under some restrictions on \(s\), \(p\) and \(q\). It is also shown that the restrictions on these parameters are sharp.
