The authors give a decomposition of a Cauchy-Green matrix, that is a symmetric positive definite \(2\times 2\) matrix \(C\), in terms of \((\det C)^{1/2}\) and a complex number \(z\) with positive imaginary part. They use formulae of 2-dimensional non-Euclidean geometry, by letting \(z\) vary in the upper-half plane model. The authors deduce then a criterion for rank one connectedness for planar objective functions, which are Cauchy-Green matrices appearing in elasticity theory.
