Summary: We propose a new approach for obtaining approximate solutions of Maxwell's equations in inhomogeneous media. This work is based on the application of quaternionic analysis technique and consists of some approximate diagonalization of Maxwell's equations. They are reduced to a pair of quaternionic equations which under some additional conditions can be solved exactly.
