Let \(X\) be a compact Hausdorff space and \(C(X)\) denote the Banach space of all continuous mappings \(f\) from \(X\) into the real numbers \(R\) with the sup norm \(\|f\|\). A linear mapping \(T\) from \(C(X)\) into itself is called a shift in case (i) \(T\) is isometric \((\|Tf\|= \|f\|)\); (ii) the nullspace of \(T\) is one-dimensional; (iii) \(\bigcap\{\text{range }T^n: 1\leq n<\infty\}= \{0\}\). A representation for \(T\) was given by the first author with \textit{D. Hart}, \textit{J. Jamison} and \textit{M. Rajagopalan} [J. Funct. Anal. 101, No. 1, 97-119 (1991; Zbl 0818.47028)] in which, for some closed subset \(X_0\) of \(X\), \((Tf)(x)= w(x) f(\psi(x))\) for each \(x\) in \(X_0\), where \(w\) maps \(X_0\) continuously into \(R\) with \(|w(x)|= 1\), and \(\psi\) is a continuous mapping from \(X_0\) onto \(X\). They showed that either \(X= X_0\) or else \(X- X_0= \{p_1\}\) is a single point and \(\psi\) is a homeomorphism. The present paper deals with the latter case and seeks conditions for the existence of a shift when \(X\) is an infinite metric space with a dense set of isolated points. It also studies the action of \(\psi\) on the isolated points of \(X- D_\psi\), where \(D_\psi= \{\psi^{-n}(p_1): 1\leq n< \infty\}\). Similar results hold when \(R\) is replaced by the complex numbers \(C\), where the nullspace of \(T\) now has complex dimension 1. Finally, examples are given to show various relations between \(D_\psi\) an the isolated points of \(X\).
