The authors describe the Fredholm symbol algebra for the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by the operators \(a(x)I\), \(b(D)=F^{-1} b(\xi)F\) \((F\)- the Fourier transform) acting on the space \(L_2(\mathbb{R}^2)\). Here \(b(\xi)\) is a homogeneous function of zero order whose restriction \(b(\omega)\) to the unit circle is continuous, and \(a(x)\) admits homogeneous discontinuities. The results include a canonical representation of the family of operators \(E(\lambda)^{-1}b (\omega)E (\lambda)\), where \(E(\lambda)\) is a certain transformation defined in terms of Mellin's transform. The paper extends and refines the two-dimensional parts of the theory developed in the book of \textit{B. A. Plamenevsky} [Algebras of pseudodifferential operators. Kluwer Academic Publishers (1989; Zbl 0679.47027)].
