A practical algorithm for computing a generalized chief series of a polycyclic-by-finite group \(G\) is described. An algorithm for determining the Fitting subgroup of \(G\) is presented, too. As applications methods for calculating the centre and FC-centre of \(G\), and exhibiting the nilpotent-by-Abelian-by-finite structure of \(G\) are described. The algorithms introduced in the paper have been implemented in the Polycyclic package of the computer algebra system GAP.
