The authors discuss the Maxwell-Landau-Lifschitz-Gilbert equations for the electromagnetic field in a ferromagnetic material. Using Lyapunov functions they derive variational principles involving weak formulations associated with these equations. Finite element formulations using linear tetrahedral and hexahedral elements are introduced and a discrete analogue to the constancy of the norm of the magnetization is produced. Examples of the application of these ideas are given to some two-dimensional problems.
