In this paper, biorthogonal wavelet families are studied. First, the authors give a characterization for systems generated by a pair of wavelet families, \(\Psi=\{\psi^1,\cdots, \psi^L\}\) and \(\widetilde{\Psi}=\{\widetilde{\psi}^1,\cdots, \widetilde{\psi}^L\}\), to be biorthogonal. Then they give a necessary and sufficient condition for such a system to arise from a pair of biorthogonal multiresolution analyses. Both conditions are given in terms of simple equations involving the functions \(\psi^{\ell}\) and \(\widetilde{\psi}^{\ell}\). Moreover, their results work for multiresolution analyses of arbitrary multiplicity, based on lattice translations and matrix dilations. And there are no restriction on the smoothness or decaying rate of the functions \(\psi^{\ell}\) and \(\widetilde{\psi}^{\ell}\). They also give some mild sufficient conditions. Several examples are given to illustrate the theorems.
