The effective field method (EFM) for multiphase composite materials of matrix-inclusion type was proposed many years ago, but it was treated as a heuristic scheme. Here, a justification of this method is proposed. Namely, the author shows that the EFM in elastostatics is in essence a variational procedure of Hashin-Shtrikman type.
