By measuring the wave propagating in bars, one uses the so-called split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). Here the useful measuring time is limited by the length of the bar. This paper describes an extension of the classical SHPB, so that the usual limitations are not valid. The method can be applied even if the dispersion is present. Numerous examples are given. Also, the influence of various factors on the sensitivity is discussed.
