Motivated by applications in chaos theory maximally looped closed planar curves \(C\) with a finite number \(n>0\) of self-transversal double points and with no triple points are investigated. After a simple characterization of such curves \(C\) it is shown that for these curves i) \(n\) is odd, ii) the winding number of their tangents has the value \(-2\) or 0 or \(+2\) and iii) a curve without inflection points has exactly \(n\) double tangents.
