Let \(A\) be a closed symmetric operator on a separable Hilbert space with equal deficiency indices. Operator \(A\) has selfadjoint extensions that can be labelled by the so-called Weyl function \(M\). This function was introduced by H. Weyl for investigation of Sturm-Liouville problems. \textit{V. A. Derkach} and \textit{M. M. Malamud} [Sov. Math. Dokl. 35, 393-398 (1987; Zbl 0655.47005)] introduced an operator analog of the Weyl function for an arbitrary closed symmetric operator with equal deficiency indices. In the paper under review, the authors obtain a complete description of the point and absolutely continuous spectrum in terms of boundary values of their Weyl functions. It is also found a subset in which the singular continuous spectrum is contained. The results are illustrated by examples including Dirac type operators.
