The main goal of the author is to prove existence and multiplicity of solutions \[ \begin{gathered} -\Delta u= u^{2^*-1}\;\text{on}\;\mathbb{R}^N\setminus \overline\Omega,\\ u> 0\quad\text{on}\;\mathbb{R}^N\setminus\Omega,\\ u= 0\;\text{on}\;\partial\Omega,\end{gathered}\tag{1} \] where \(\Omega\) is a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) with smooth boundary \(2^*= {2N\over N-2}\), \(N\geq 3\). The author shows that the topology of \(\widetilde{\mathbb{R}}^N\setminus\overline\Omega\) effects not only the existence but also the multiplicity of solutions (1), as in the case of bounded domains. Here \(\widetilde{\mathbb{R}}^N\setminus\overline\Omega\) stands for the one-point compactification of \(\widetilde{\mathbb{R}}^N\setminus\overline\Omega\).
