Geck described decomposition numbers of \(\text{SU}(3,q^2)\) in nondefining characteristic. If \(r\geq 5\), then the principal \(r\)-block of \(\text{SU}(3,q^2)\) has the trivial character \(\chi_1\), the cuspidal character \(\chi_{q^2-q}\), and the Steinberg character \(\chi_{q^3}\) as a basic set for the block. In this case the decomposition of \(\chi_{q^3}\) depends on an unknown parameter \(\alpha\). If \(r=3\), then the principal \(r\)-block of \(\text{SU}(3,q^2)\) has \(\chi_1\), \(\chi_{q^2-q}\) and three characters \(\chi^{(0)}\), \(\chi^{(1)}\), \(\chi^{(2)}\) of degree \((q-1)(q^2-q+1)/3\) as a basic set for the block. In this case the decomposition of \(\chi_{q^3}\) depends on an unknown parameter \(\beta\). Theorem. (1) If \(r\geq 5\), then the unknown parameter \(\alpha\) is 2. (2) If \(r=3\), then the unknown parameter \(\beta\) is 0.
