There is an extensive literature concerning automorphisms of the associative or Lie algebra of upper or strictly upper triangular matrices. The authors show that any automorphism of the associative algebra of strictly upper triangular matrices, \(T\), with entries in a field is the product of four types of automorphisms. Loosely, these automorphisms are conjugation or the negative of conjugations by certain elements in the full matrix algebra or they amount to adding certain elements to the last column of each matrix \(A\) in \(T.\)
