Let \(\Omega\subset\mathbb R^n\) be a smoothly bounded domain, \(m,\alpha,\beta>0\). Condider the equation \((u^m)_t=\Delta u+u^\alpha\) in \(\Omega\times(0,T)\), complemented by the nonlinear boundary condition \(\partial u/\partial\nu=u^\beta\) and the initial condition \(u(x,0)=u_0(x)\), where \(u_0\) is a positive function satisfying the compatibility conditions. The authors show that all solutions of this problem are global if and only if \(\alpha\leq m\) and \(\beta\leq\min(m,(m+1)/2)\). If \(\alpha>m\) and \(\beta>\alpha-m+1\) then they use the method of \textit{A. Friedman} and \textit{B. McLeod} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 34, 425-447 (1985; Zbl 0576.35068)] in order to estimate the blow-up rate for time-increasing blowing-up solutions. Optimal blow-up rate estimates are obtained if \(n=1\), \(m>1\), \(\alpha>m\), \(\beta>(m+1)/2\) and \(u_0',u_0''\geq 0\).
