\textit{G.-L. Yu} [in Invent. Math. 139, No. 1, 201-240 (2000; Zbl 0956.19004)], introduced a property which he calls property A for discrete metric spaces and for groups, which is a very useful generalization of amenability. It is closed under direct and semi-direct products of groups and it holds for hyperbolic groups and metric spaces of bounded geometry with finite asymptotic dimension in the sense of Gromov. Yu showed that this property implies the coarse Baum-Connes Conjecture and hence the Novikov Higher Signature Conjecture for finitely generated groups. In the paper under review, the author proves that if a group acts by isometries on a metric space with finite asymptotic dimension such that the \(d\)-stabilizers (a notion that he defines in this paper) have property A, then the group itself has property A. He also proves that finite unions (certain infinite unions) of spaces with property A have property A. As a corollary, he obtains a new proof of a theorem of J. L. Tu stating that a group acting on a tree such that the stabilizer of each vertex has property A also has property A.
