Let \(Y\) be a projective algebraic variety of dimension \(n\) defined over \(\mathbb{C}\). In this paper the author studies when \(Y\) contains the support of a complete intersection \(0\)-cycle, this being a 0-cycle that is the intersection of \(Y\) with a complete intersection of codimension \(n\). Let \(w_1, \dots, w_\pi\) be a basis for the \(\mathbb{C}\)-vector space of closed abelian 1-forms on \(Y\) (these are sections of certain sheaves studied by \textit{D. Barlet} [in: Fonct. de plusieurs variables complexes, Lect. Notes Math. 670, 187--204 (1978; Zbl 0398.32009)]). Let \(\Lambda\) be the \(\mathbb{Z}\)-module generated by the vectors \((\int_{\gamma} w_1, \dots, \int_{\gamma} w_\pi) \in \mathbb{C}^{\pi}\), where \(\gamma\) is a closed path on \(\text{Reg}(Y)\). The author calls \(Y\) strongly singular if \(\Lambda\) does not generate \(\mathbb{C}^\pi\) as an \(\mathbb{R}\)-vector space. The paper has two main results. The first one states that if \(Y\) is strongly singular and irreducible then there exists a pluriharmonic function \(\Psi\) defined on \(\text{Reg}(Y)\) such that \(\Psi = 0\) is a real-analytic hypersurface of \(\text{Reg}(Y)\) and its complement in \(\text{Reg}(Y)\) has two connected components \({\Psi > 0}\) and \({\Psi < 0}\) whose closures meet every complete intersection of codimension \(n\). The second result gives a sufficient condition for a subset of \(Y\) to contain the support of a complete intersection 0-cycle (the condition being that the subset is ``small'' in a sense described in the paper).
