The author extends a result of \textit{S. Montgomery} [J. Algebra 195, 558--579 (1997; Zbl 0890.17032)], thus generalizing a theorem of Herstein to the case of Lie color algebras. Let \(G\) be an abelian group, \(F\) a field of characteristic \(\neq 2\), and \(\varepsilon :G\times G\rightarrow F^*\) an antisymmetric bicharacter. It is proved that if \(A\) is a \(G\)-graded simple associative \(F\)-algebra with \(\dim_{Z_{\varepsilon}(A)}>8\), then \([A,A]_{\varepsilon}/ ([A,A]_{\varepsilon}\cap Z_{\varepsilon}(A))\) is a simple \((\varepsilon ,G)\)-Lie color algebra or a commutative \((\varepsilon ,G)\)-Lie color algebra, where \(Z_{\varepsilon}(A)\) is the color center of \(A\). Conditions implying that this quotient is necessarily simple are given.
