    A semilinear equation of the following type: \[ -\Delta u + u =f(x,u) \] is studied in a domain \(\Omega\) that, in general can be unbounded. The goal is to show that there exist a class of unbounded domains for which the corresponding functional \[ \varphi(u) = {1 \over 2} \int_\Omega (u^2+| \nabla u| ^2)\,dx - {1 \over p} \int_\Omega | u| ^p\,dx \] satisfies the Palais-Smale condition.
