Let \(N\) be a nest of projections on a Hilbert space and let \(A(N)\) be the corresponding nest algebra. A subalgebra of \(A(N)\) is called large if it contains all finite rank operators in \(A(N)\). The main result of the present paper is a characterization of all maximal \(n\)-nilpotent ideals of a large subalgebra of \(A(N)\). The author also shows that if \(N\), \(M\) are two nests on a separable Hilbert space, then two large subalgebras respectively of \(A(N)\) and \(A(M)\) are isomorphic if and only if \(N\), \(M\) are similar.
