For the mesh-free least-squares-based finite difference (MLSFD) method of order 3 the authors generate an overdetermined matrix for the computation of derivatives. The procedure uses two-dimensional Taylor series. The resulting system is solved by least-squares method. Because this is numerically more expensive (more coefficients are needed in the generated sparse matrix for discretized equations), the MLSFD method is combined with conventional finite difference method in a region around a circular cylinder. However, around the cylinder which should be the mesh-free region, a regular distribution of nodes is used. This avoids the search for neighboring nodes which is the main problem of really mesh-free methods. The method is used to solve two-dimensional unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in streamfunction-vorticity formulation at low Reynolds numbers.
