The paper deals with the number of periodic solutions of the second-order polynomial differential equation \[ x^{\prime\prime}=a_{00}(t)+a_{10}(t)x+a_{01}(t)x^\prime+ a_{20}(t)x^2+a_{11}(t)xx^\prime+a_{02}(t)x^{\prime 2} \] and derives many valuable criteria to determine the number of periodic solutions. The author exploits similar properties of the Riccati equation and in particular results initiated by \textit{V. I. Mironenko} [Differ. Eq. 17, 1027--1023 (1982; Zbl 0484.34029)]. The latter establishes that under \(\omega\)-periodicity of the coefficients one of the following statements is true for the reference equation: 1) the equation has no \(2\omega\)-periodic solution; 2) the equation has a unique \(2\omega\)-periodic solution; 3) the equation has just two \(2\omega\)-periodic solutions; 4) all solutions existing on \([-\omega,\omega]\) are \(2\omega\)-periodic.
