The classical Markus-Yamabe conjecture, proved a decade ago, essentially states that a vector field on \(\mathbb{R}^2\) defines a globally asymptotically stable dynamical system if its differential has negative trace and positive determinant everywhere. The present paper replaces the determinant condition by unique existence of an equilibrium and its local asymptotic stability, and then proves global asymptotic stability for quadratic polynomial systems and for polynomial Liénard systems. Also, a nonpolynomial counterexample is exhibited.
