The authors have suggested a new symmetry analysis method based on the construction of invariants, different from common invariants such as the Casimir operator, harmonic and rational invariants [\textit{K. S. Chou, G. X. Li} and \textit{C. Z. Qu}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 261, 741--751 (2001; Zbl 0992.35006)]. This method is applied here to the study of the nine-dimensional symmetry group \(H_2\) of the \((1+2)\)-dimensional heat equations \(u_t=u_{xx}+u_{yy}\) and \(u_t=u_{xx}+u_{yy}+F(y,x,y,u_x,u_y)\) and to construct the \(1\)-parameter and \(2\)-parameter optimal systems of Lie subalgebras of the Lie algebra \(h_2\) of the group \(H_2\). The most general interactions \(F(t,x,y,u_x,u_y)\) are found such that the second quasilinear equation is invariant under each subgroup.
