Let \(G\) denote a split connected reductive \(p\)-adic group and let \(P=MN\) be a parabolic subgroup. For an irreducible discrete series representation \(\sigma\) of \(M\), the reducibility of the normalized induced representation \(\text{Ind}_P^G\, \sigma\) is governed by a certain subgroup of the Weyl group of \(M\) called the \(R\)-group. Arthur conjectured the existence of an analogous \(R\)-group in certain situations where \(\sigma\) is not a discrete series. This paper extends the results in some of the authors' earlier papers on this conjecture. This paper deals with a technical property of the normalizing factor used to define the (normalized) intertwining operators for \(\text{Ind}_P^G\, \sigma\). The authors establish a relationship between the normalizing factor used for the intertwining operators for \(\text{Ind}_P^G\, \sigma\) and those used for intertwining operators for \(\text{Ind}_P^G\, \sigma^\vee\), where \(\sigma^\vee\) denotes the dual in the sense of Aubert-Schneider-Stuhler. The authors show how this new relationship connects with their previous work on Arthur's \(R\)-group conjecture.
