Let \(X\) be an orbit closure in the space \(M\) of \(t\)-tuples of \(d\times d\) matrices (over an algebraically closed field \(k\)) endowed with the simultaneous conjugation action of the general linear group \(\text{GL}_d(k)\). Recall that there is a one-to-one correspondence between \(\text{GL}_d(k)\)-orbits in \(M\) and the isomorphism classes of \(d\)-dimensional modules over the free associative algebra generated by \(t\) elements. The main result of the paper is that \(X\) is regular at any point \(y\) such that the orbit of \(y\) has codimension one in \(X\). The proof involves the study of bimodules over the commutative ring \(k[x,y]/(x^3-y^2)\), and uses mainly the representation theory of associative algebras.
