In [\textit{A. S. Holevo}, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 46, 2256--2261 (2000; Zbl 1002.94014)] and [\textit{T. Ogawa} and \textit{H. Nagaoka}, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 45, 2486--2489 (1999; Zbl 0960.94014)] the problem of the concavity of the auxiliary function of the quantum reliability function was left unsolved. In this paper this question is partially answered (in the interval \([0,1]\)). The authors establish and then apply some trace inequalities related to a matrix algorithm. The general problem in noncommutative (quantum) communication theory remains open.
