Let \(\mathcal N\) be a semifinite von Neumann factor with a faithful normal semifinite trace and let \({\mathcal L}^{1,w}\) be an ideal in \(\mathcal N\). For example, if \(\mathcal N\) is the algebra of all bounded operators on \(L^2(M)\) where \(M\) is a compact Riemannian \(n\)-manifold, the ideal \({\mathcal L}^{1,w}\) contains all pseudodifferential operators of order \(-n\). A formula for the Dixmier trace \(\tau_\omega(T)\), \(T\in {\mathcal L}^{1,w}\) , is calculated. It is proved that \[ \tau_\omega(T)=\omega-\lim_{t\rightarrow \infty}\frac{1}{\log(1+t)}\int_{\lambda\notin \frac{1}{t}G}\lambda\, d\mu_T(\lambda), \] where \(G\) is a bounded neighborhood of \(0\in {\mathbb C}\) and \(\mu_T\) is a Brown spectral measure of \(T\). If \(T\) is measurable, then the \(\omega\)-limit can be replaced with the ordinary limit.
