The authors present fast solvers that are designed on the basis of a discretized wavelet Galerkin method with the Sloan improvement of the Galerkin solution, for Fredholm integral equations of the second kind on the real line. Authors solve the Galerkin system by the GMRES or by the Gauss elimination method. In designing the fast wavelet solvers they assume that the kernel is \(m\)-smooth and satisfy a decay condition. The authors point out that using GMRES, the \(2m\)-smoothness of the kernel is sufficient and in the case of the Gauss method the kernel must be smoother.
