The author says that a finitely generated group \(G\) has girth at least \(m\), a positive integer or infinity, if for every finite generating set \(X\) of \(G\), the elements of \(X\) satisfy a relator of length at most \(m\). He then shows that if \(G\), a non-cyclic finitely generated group, is hyperbolic, one-relator or linear, then \(G\) has finite girth if and only if \(G\) is soluble-by-finite.
