Consider the Sturm-Liouville differential expression defined by \(ly:=\) \(-y^{\prime \prime }+q(x)y\), where \(x\) is on a weighted graph \(G\) that has \(K\) edges of lengths \(l_{i}\) and \(q\) is a continuous function. The authors study the selfadjoint extension generated by applying boundary conditions at the nodes so solutions can be linked. To do so, the operator is written in a system form, where all edges are rescaled as the interval \([0,1].\) This leads to an equivalent matrix operator defined by \(L:=-WF^{\prime \prime }+QF\), where \(W:=\text{diag}[ l_{i}^{-1}] _{i=1}^{K}\) is the rescaling matrix, \(Q=\text{diag}[ Q_{i}] _{i=1}^{K}\) and a general boundary condition \(AY(0)+BY^{\prime }(0)+CY(1)+DY^{\prime }(1)=0\), where obviously \(Y\) is a \(K\)-dimensional vector. The first result is that selfadjointness does not imply regularity of the boundary conditions. Next, the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues is given by \(\sqrt{\lambda _{n}}=\frac{n\pi }{L(G)}+O(1)\), where \(L(G)\) is the total length of the weighted graph \(G\) and their algebraic and geometric multiplicities are equal.
