A wave map \(u(x,t)\) is a smooth map from \(\mathbb R^{n+1}\), `viewed as standard Minkowski space' to a Riemannian manifold \((M,g)\) is defined to be a critical point of the Lagrangian \[ \int_{\mathbb R^{n+1}} \langle \partial^\alpha, \partial_\alpha u \rangle_g \,dx \,dt \] where \(\partial_\alpha\) denotes the \(n+1\) derivatives of spacetime with the usual summation conventions. The Euler-Lagrange equations for this equation form a semilinear wave equation, with the nonlinearity being quadratic in the first derivatives of \(\phi\). In local coordinates, \(u\) has to satisfy: \[ \square u^i+\Gamma^i_{jk} \partial_{\alpha} u^i \partial^{\alpha} u^k = 0 \] where \(\Gamma^i_{jk}\) are the Riemannian Christoffel symbols associated with the metric \(g\). This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem associated to the problem of wave maps. In higher dimensions, especially four and higher, much more is known for the small data regularity problem, due to the use of Strichartz estimates in this setting. However, in low dimensions very few is known. Regarding the Cauchy problem associated to the above problem S. Klainerman conjectured that: For the standard hyperbolic space, the classical wave maps originating on \( \mathbb R^{2 + 1}\) exist for arbitrary smooth initial data. The author's aim in this paper is to establish a partial result towards the proof of the above Klainerman's conjecture. Indeed he proves that wave maps with smooth initial data and small energy from \(\mathbb R^{2 + 1}\) to the Lobachevsky plane stay smooth globally in time.
