Let \(R\) be a discrete valuation domain with nonzero prime ideal \(p\). A nonzero pure \(R\)-submodule of the \(p\)-adic completion \(\widehat{R}\) of \(R\) is called a purely indecomposable module, and a pi-decomposable module is a finite direct sum of purely indecomposable modules. A pure exact sequence \(0\rightarrow A \rightarrow B \rightarrow C \rightarrow 0\) of modules is pi-balanced if the induced sequence Hom\(_R(J,B) \rightarrow \) Hom\(_R(J,C) \rightarrow 0\) is exact for each purely indecomposable module \(J\). A pi-balanced homomorphic image of a pi-decomposable module is called a pi-balanced module. The paper uses the properties of pi-balanced sequences to investigate the properties of pi-balanced modules. They show (Theorem 10) that images of a pi-decomposable module with certain rigidity conditions on its summands can be classified by a complete set of isomorphism invariants. These images have finite \(p\)-rank, but need not have finite rank. They also give (Theorem 23) an internal characterization of torsion-free reduced images of finite-rank pi-decomposable modules. In addition the article has numerous examples to illustrate the extent and limits of their results.
