The authors consider an additive analogue of a classical result by \textit{J. Dieudonné} [Arch. Math., Oberwolfach 1, 282-287 (1949; Zbl 0032.10601)] on singularity preservers. More precisely, they start by defining an additive mapping \(\Phi:{\mathcal M}_n(F)\to{\mathcal M}_n(F)\) to be \textit{almost surjective} if the linear span of the image of \(\Phi\) equals the whole matrix algebra. They proceed by proving that if the characteristic of a field \(F\) is zero and an additive, almost surjective \(\Phi\) satisfies \(\det X=0 \Longrightarrow \det\Phi(X)=0\) then \(\Phi(X)=A J(X)\) for some invertible matrix \(A\) and some Jordan homomorphism \(J\). Moreover, \(J\) is a composition of a similarity, a transposition, and a mapping that applies a field endomorphism entry-wise. As a consequence, a complete classification of surjective additive mappings, which preserve invertibility on matrix algebras over a field of characteristic zero, is also given. Interestingly, it is also shown that there exist `wild-type' additive invertibility preservers, if surjectivity is replaced by almost surjectivity.
