This paper is concerned with the numerical solution of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations by means of some modified Runge-Kutta (RK) methods termed as functionally fitted RK methods. In these methods, for a given linear space of functions, the available parameters of an \(s\)-stage RK method are chosen so that satisfy \(s+1\) collocation conditions at the nodes of the underlying formula in a basis functions of the space. In this setting, the author considers the particular case of explicit diagonally implicit RK methods with respect to a 3-dimensional fitting space, deriving a family of fourth order methods and studying their stability properties. Finally, a fourth order method is selected among the members of this family attending their accuracy and stability properties. The paper includes also the results of some numerical experiments with four test problems which are known to possess oscillating solutions in some cases with some fitted methods derived taking into account a trigonometric space with an approximate frequency of the corresponding problem. The paper ends with some remarks on the possibility to include embedded methods with a variable step size technique applying it to the two body problem with small eccentricity.
