    Nach einleitenden Bemerkungen über Prioritätsfragen setzt Verf. zunächst an dem einfachen Beispiel der gewöhnlichen Extreme mit Nebenbedingungen auseinander, daß sich in gewissen Fällen ein nicht-normales Problem (singulärer Punkt der durch die Nebenbedingungen definierten Mannigfaltigkeit) dadurch auf ein normales zurückführen läßt, daß man nur einen Teil der Nebenbedingungen beibehält und zu der zum Extrem zu machenden Funktion die linken Seiten der restlichen Bedingungsgleichungen, mit den Lagrange-Faktoren versehen, addiert. Er zeigt sodann, daß entsprechendes in der Variationsrechnung gilt, und gewinnt so die Hauptergebnisse von \textit{Graves} (Ann. Math., Princeton, (2) 33 (1932), 747-752; F.~d.~M. 58\(_{\text{I}}\), 535) und \textit{Hestenes} (Trans. Amer. math. Soc. 35 (1933), 479-490; 36 (1934), 793-818; Amer. J.
