\textit{A. Zastrow} [Pac. J. Math. 186, No. 2, 369--396 (1998; Zbl 0933.55008)] and \textit{S. K. Hansen} [Math. Scand. 83, No. 2, 205--219 (1998; Zbl 0932.55003)] showed that singular homology with real coefficients and measure homology coincide algebraically on the category of CW-complexes. The author proves that this isomorphism is isometric with respect to the \(\ell^{1}\)-seminorm on singular homology and the seminorm on measure homology induced by the total variation. This result is applied to the computation of the simplicial volume via measure homology. So, measure homology is used in order to prove Gromov's proportionality principle of simplicial volume.
