The nonlinear problem of the generation of internal waves in a two layer incompressible liquid of finite depth with a tangential discontinuity of velocity has been investigated. The existence of waves with negative energy which are unstable, in a region with smaller wave numbers is well known. The linear characteristics and the nonlinear stage in the instability of this kind of waves are discussed in detail.
