Dissipative relativistic fluids are matter configurations represented by density, pressure, heat flux vector and viscous stress tensors. These quantities are subject to general relativistic laws of mechanics and thermodynamics. \textit{C. Eckart} [Phys. Rev., II. Ser. 58, 919-924 (1940; Zbl 0027.03107)] presented an analysis of this problem which was later improved by \textit{W. Israel} [Nonstationary irreversible thermodynamics: A causal relativistic theory Ann. Phys. 100, 310-331 (1976)]. This paper confirms that Israel's approach eliminates the problems in Eckart's associated with acausality, dissipative instability, and the initial value problem. Furthermore, it generalizes Israel's work to include non- uniform distributions.
