The authors study the problem of thermal convection instability of liquid metals in magneto-hydrodynamics. This study results in the establishment of the dispertion relation of an infinitely extended horizontal layer of fluid under two-dimensional magnetic field, and thereby the problem is reduced to an eigenvalue problem for a stream function. Moreover, the authors present an analytical discussion for the dispersion relations for low viscosity fluid and high viscosity fluid, and they obtained some numerical results. For example, it is shown that the critical Rayleigh number and other related constants for low viscosity fluid are much different than those for the high viscosity fluid.
