This paper considers the problem of determining the ample and very ample divisors on a rational surface. In particular, let X be a smooth rational surface over an algebraically closed field admitting a birational morphism to \({\mathbb{P}}^ 2\), and suppose that X has a reduced and irreducible anticanonical divisor D. Section 1 of the paper gives a constructive determination of the ample divisor classes of X. The rest of the paper is devoted to proving that a divisor class F of X is very ample if and only if F is ample and the restriction of F to D has degree at least three.
